Movement, Freedom, and Distortion

I have Mal de Débarquement Syndrome (MdDS), a neurological condition that affects the signals between my brain, ears and eyes. It often makes me feel as if I'm permanently on a boat. That constant sensation of shifting movement influences the way I stitch and underpins my interest in instability, freedom and distortion.

This portfolio includes a small selection of my ongoing exploration into how stitch direction, negative space and abstraction can create a feeling of spontaneity. I try to embrace imbalance as part of the process, allowing it to shape the work rather than correct it. My research into expressiveness, especially Martha Jungwirth’s manifesto The Ape in Me, has encouraged me to work more instinctively, letting movement and mark-making guide the stitch.
